“Towtally” Possible: What tow truck drivers can teach you about business.

Going on ride-alongs doesn’t mean you’re always responding to shootings and drug deals. Sometimes, it means directing traffic around accidents and waiting for tow trucks in 95-degree heat. Yesterday was one of those days.

This Sunday, while standing at the scene of a 3-car accident, we watched a 2-car crash happen down the block. Within the hour, we responded to another 2-car accident nearby. That made 7 cars needing to be towed and I had a front row seat to all of them.

Hopefully, you have limited experience with tow trucks and accidents. However, if you’ve ever watched a tow, you’ll be amazed by the speed and agility of the drivers. They zip around in their large trucks and maneuver powerful equipment into place to clear the roads quickly. Watching 7 cars towed within 1 hour taught me some cool business lessons.

The Right Tools For The Job

Tow truck drivers roll up to the scene in huge trucks capable of pulling and transporting multiple cars. If your tow company sent out a small pickup with some rope, you need a new insurance company! Pulling a large van out of a ditch requires a powerful truck and having the right tools makes the job so much easier.

As a business, make sure your tools are suited for the task at hand.

Clean Up After Yourself

Car crashes aren’t pretty. There’s glass, fuel, plastic and other debris scattered across the road. Aside from being aesthetically displeasing,  it can cause even more wrecks. Drivers can slip on oil, puncture a tire or even get distracted by a bumper lying in the road. Tow truck drivers always keep a broom in the back (right tool for the job!) so they can clean up the mess.

As a business, make sure you’re to tidy up any messes you might make.

Nothing Is Impossible

I don’t believe in magic but these guys are magicians. They can maneuver their tow trucks into the craziest positions to extract cars from even crazier places. Often, we’re standing there saying, “Oh, there’s NO WAY he’s going to get that car out of there.” And just as often, we’re wrong. They don’t believe in the impossible and neither should you.

As a business, recognize the only limitations are that which you hold yourself to.

Recap

Tow truck drivers are cool. But more than that, they can show you some unique tips that will help your business. Follow their example and you’ll see how these lessons can help you.
